Museum of Boulder

Great little find. There’s lots of little nooks to read about the history of Boulder. Great views of the flatirons and a cool exhibit on the history of food in Boulder. They offer classes too, such as an Mexican cooking class

This museum was such an unexpected splash of joy. I try to always visit a museum or two when traveling, and I wondered in here without knowing much. I am blown away by the quality of information and how it was laid out to be as digestible as possible. I work at a museum, and it is so hard to break big, complex topics into digestible bites … and then crescendo those bites into an interdisciplinary understanding. This place pulls it off. My favorite exhibition was on food. The exhiait was broken into two parts, the history of nourishing bodies in this area and the progression of commodification of feeding ourselves. Clearly, immense effort went into the creation of environments. I felt like I was working back of house in a kitchen, lounging on pillows in a Moroccan restaurant, and making my family dinner in the 1900s. I felt like I was in Mr. Rodger’s “picture-picture” behind the scenes segment. They did many small things to make the museum more accessible— qr codes for language translations, plastic cards printed with display information in Spanish, stations for kids throughout (for example, a place to “design” (draw on) paper plates next to a pottery display). I spend a lot of time at my job talking about the history of and the current effect of diffiult topics (slavery, indentured servitude, etc). I am always looking for verbage and phrasing to make my conversations with guests better to digest — we want people to embrace and understand America’s full history. This museum modeled a full understanding of the city’s history that embodied pride while honoring missteps. The museum faced difficult topics head on with bravery. People who live in this city should be proud of the place they created, as should the curators of this museum. Thank you for taking me on this journey! A very nice museum, well laid out and shows everything I’ve ever wondered about Boulder and its history! Plus they have a great section on staple restaurants from past and present Boulder- super fun to check out! Plus if you have SNAP then it’s totally free, so worth it!

What a fabulous local museum! We came specifically for the black history exhibit and we’re not disappointed. Learning about these leaders from the African-American community was a sensational opportunity to expand our knowledge. The displays upstairs about Boulder and the natural environment are really impressive. Overall, the museum is well organized and has information for visitors of every age. Even on a cloudy day, the visit to the rooftop patio of for excellent views of the Flat Irons. Even though I don’t have kids, I was intrigued by the Google maker-space and all of the cool things that young folks can make on their visit to the museum. Be sure to visit the well-stocked gift shop— there’s lots of interesting items for kids.

I do not recommend this for little kids. The kid space is very under-developed, you’re better off going to a playground. A lot of the stuff in the kids area doesn’t work anymore. Maybe this museum is good for history buffs especially food related? Lots of food exhibits. It feels like someone had a lot of memorabilia/collections and decided to start a museum.
