Camp Shadybrook

This whole experience was so unorganized and confusing from the start. When given cabin assignments there were way more people than there were beds causing confusion and chaos. The instructions given at lunch were super hard to hear because no speaker system was used to tell everyone in the dining hall. I missed most of it because your employees can’t yell louder than a hundred plus kids. Further, Mia is the rudest, most unprofessional person I have encountered in quite a while. After given little to no direction, and not being able to hear what was said at lunch, we were screamed at by Mia for being at the picnic tables by the lake, we were over there because canoeing was our first assigned activity. She’s obviously not good with kids or customers in general. She was very unfriendly, short and borderline rude to the kids the whole time. The kids she screamed at are still talking about how scared they were from this encounter so I really appreciate her traumatizing my kids. The rest of the counselors were very pleasant and were great with the kids.

We had our wedding at Camp Shady Brook in May 2019 and it was nothing short of incredible. Our guests stayed in cabins and got to participate in archery, canoeing, riflery- all of the traditional camp activities! Shady Brook made all of the food and did a wonderful job- they were accommodating to all our requests and let us build our own menu with favorite family recipes. By far the best part was Chris and the other camp staff- they were incredibly accommodating to all of our ideas and executed the weekend so smoothly I didn’t have to worry about anything. I've been here two summers, and I absolutely love this place! The activities are a ton of fun, the campers and staff are friendly, and the food is pretty good. The water is very cold, we only got 5 minutes to shower, and there wasn't always enough food (maybe I was just hungry from all the hiking), but that's pretty typical of all the camps I've been to. I've made some of the best memories of my life with my friends here.

Camp Shady Brook was my home away from home for 5 years in my childhood. They taught me how to shoot a bow and arrow, how to swim in a lake, tug of war across the lake, log rolling. They taught you how to manage your money at the mini store for kids to buy snacks, and drinks. They taught teamwork. Meals together with your cabin, and all other kids was cool. The mountain hiking was incredible. This camp has been a great thing for so many kids across the years. Thank you YMCA for Camp Shady Brook, and all the staff who has helped keep it up, and running. I went to Shady Brook 3 years in a row in the early 60s. It was great for a Kansas girl who loved the mountains. My Dad was at Ft Carson every summer for two weeks, so I went to camp. It was magical. Some of my happiest childhood memories. Sue Clopton
