Our 8U team participated in a jamboree at Arvada Hockey Association this past weekend. In most jamborees we’ve been to, there are no refs and coaches on the ice manage play and safety. At this event, Arvada had young kids wearing full referee uniforms on the ice, which made it appear that they were monitoring play. In reality, they told me after the game that they weren’t actually referees and were only there to “keep play moving,” and they were barely watching the game. During our games, play became very rough and several of our kids suffered head impacts. I went to speak with the Executive Hockey Director, John “Kibby” McKibbon, to share that this setup was confusing for coaches and players, and to suggest either communicating clearly to coaches or not putting non-referees in ref uniforms. Instead of a conversation, I was met with sarcasm and dismissive “thank yous,” and was told that coaches are responsible for safety. I know there are many good families involved with Arvada Hockey, but based on this experience I left feeling that safety concerns and parent feedback weren’t taken seriously. I hope they consider clearer communication and more active oversight in the future, especially for 8U events.
